“Thinking Outside the Box” on Pet Teeth Care and Naughty Kitties

Recently in the clinic, we had someone drop off a perfectly beautiful cat to be put to sleep for being “old” and urinating all over the house. I had serious reservations about performing the procedure without at least giving the kitty a good check up.  After performing a thorough physical exam  (and checking a quick urine sample), the owners of the clinic and I both decided to offer to treat the kitty (at our expense) for a urinary tract infection if the clients would be willing to let us try to save her.  Luckily, they agreed! And after a close call she is back at home with the rest of her family.

This week this same question came up in the Facebook group Positive Pet Advice.  Today we discuss what to do if your kitty is going to the bathroom outside of the litter box.

Additionally, a question was asked about what types of tooth care products are best to use on your animals. I let you know my favorites so you don’t waste your money on ineffective products.

Hope you enjoy this week’s edition of Hot and Health Topics with DrQ! Please subscribe to my YouTube channel if you do!

Are You Ready for a Magical Bond?

I have a confession to make. I have been calling myself a Life Coach for quite some time, although the reality is, I have not been doing much coaching. Consulting, yes. Veterinary care, yes. However, I have not given clients the opportunity to engage with me in a true coaching experience. Where we work together, week by week, side by side, to really uncover, dig deep, bring to light, and solve, any and all of the issues you have with your beloved animals that stand in the way between you having the most magical, loving relationship you can even now imagine.

Because, that relationship, that bond, is really what is all about, isn’t it? We were all looking for love when we brought animals into our lives. That is the one driving force which binds all us animal lovers, and that is love. That unconditional love animals uniquely provide for us during our human experience.  And when we chose to bring animals into our lives, we were  hoping that we got more love, much more love, than heartache, and hassle.  For some of us, this is the case. And then we spend each day in fear of losing that love. We all know they just don’t live long enough. That is the greatest tragedy of giving your heart to an animal. You are the lucky ones.

For others, it hasn’t quite yet worked out that way.  The unexpected heartaches and hassles, all work together to build a wall around our hearts and don’t allow us to fully experience the joy that comes with sharing our lives with an animal. Each new day brings an opportunity for renewal. Some days are better than others, but the struggle is real, and the answers are not always so easy to find.

If you can identify with either one of these scenarios, I have a special invitation for you. No one knows animal lovers better than I do. The secret places deep in your heart that you only allow your animals to see. Your doubts, your fears, your weaknesses, that you attempt to drown in your animal’s sweet furry hugs.  I know, because I have walked in those shoes too, all my life. So I invite you now, to walk with me. Either to that place where the hassles and heartaches disappear, and nothing is left but the joyous, bountiful, unconditional love, or to that place where the doubts, insecurities, and fears melt away, and you are fully present in your animal’s love, knowing that there is nothing that stands between you and your beloved friend in the material world and that an eternity together is assured.

So, if you are ready to invest in your animal (s), and in yourself, and make the commitment to achieve the most amazing, productive, happy, healthy, youngest, longest life together that you could have ever dreamed possible, then join me for a 6 or 12 month journey, to achieve results beyond your wildest dreams. http://drquesten.com/consultations/

How Much Space Do I Need For An/Another Animal?

Lot’s of people want animals in their lives,  but don’t always get them because they are not sure if they have enough room in their condo, small home, or small acreage for the animals they would like to have.  Here in this live video clip we talk about just this very subject.

Additionally, I answered a viewer question about how to keep a puppy quiet in a crate at night, and as usual, I attempt to demonstrate brushing my cat’s teeth, and encouraging you to give it a try!

Wish people had to have a license to get a pet? Now they can!

As a real animal lover, have you ever found yourself wishing people had to have a license, or pass some sort of exam, in order to adopt and care for an animal? I know I sure have, it is frustrating sometimes to see what other people do.  Here we spend all this time and effort, getting to learn all about our breed before we choose one, the food, the care, their needs…we pride ourselves on being educated caregivers, and if you are reading this, you probably know exactly what I mean!

But what if there WAS just such a license? Or a certificate? Or a simple, yet comprehensive program, where an animal lover could learn all the basics of caring for animals, that was just as quick, and probably easier, than getting a drivers license? What if you could learn, or get a refresher, on EVERYTHING you need to know that is ESSENTIAL for the health, safety, and happiness, of  dogs and cats, all in a NUTSHELL?

HAVE YOU thought about going back to go to school,  to pursue your passion and follow such lengthy pursuits as becoming a certified dog trainer, or veterinary technician,  but spending upwards of $20,000 on an education, is just not doable right now?

ARE YOU an animal loving person who might be  thinking about a career with animals, and would love to have a good, quick, comprehensive overview to supplement your  current knowledge, and to help you to decide if a career with animals is for YOU?

WHAT IF if there was a program that was perfect for the person who ALREADY obtained a degree or certificate,  or has years of experience, and just wants a comprehensive refresher and  to make sure they are up on the latest information? And wants an easy program to direct their clients to?

FINALLY, do you  just really love the animal(s) in your care, and ever wonder if there could be more things you could be doing in your daily routine to increase the chances that YOUR animal will happily, long outlive it’s expected lifespan? Could this be you?

Well now, here it is! Introducing www.StealMoreYears.com, a virtual university offering, eight, once weekly programs, running back to back, and all your long. The first seven weeks will cover DrQ’s 7 Secrets: Life Hacks to Longevity, with one week for wrap-up and personal Q & A with the doctor. This segment will include my simple 3 Step Guide,  which you can use to solve ANY behavior problems, with ANY animal! At the end of this 8 weeks, you will be eligible to take a short exam on the topics covered in the program. A passing score on the exam gets you a DrQ Certificate of Completion for Level 1 competence in understanding the health and behavior of dogs and cats.  Later courses will include horses, fish, and train-the-trainer programs.

Imagine the implications! Adopters and breeders could require potential buyers to take the course to help ensure they know everything they need to know, and set that pet up for a long, healthy, successful life with their new family! Volunteers in animal shelters, dog trainers, and veterinary technicians will have more tools in their tool box when helping people choose, and care for,  a pet. Parents, enroll your kids! You will have more tools in YOUR toolbelt, too,  and you can help others do the same!

Pass on your knowledge and expertise, and help even more people and animals! Take even better care of your animal’s, they will love you even more for it! Strengthen the bond between you and the animals that love you,  even more than what you share now! Dare to imagine it!

I personally guarantee you WILL learn something about animals, and behavior, that you have never heard before! No matter how many years you have been doing this, or had animals! I know, because I am just like you, eager to learn and read and devour every bit of information I can about animals, and NO ONE ELSE is teaching what I am bursting to share with you!

Have You Had Your 5 Second’s of Stillness Today?

scout-200x300This “test” is the number one most important thing I recommend every animal lover should HAVE to do At LEAST once a week, to keep your animal healthy, and happy to be with you!

Imagine this, your lovable, reliable, friendly animal, suddenly acts out and shuns you. It can happen at any time, for many reasons. How big of a deal is it, really, if something like this happens once in a while?
Everyone has a bad day, right?

WRONG!

For example, one family’s beloved pet dog, suddenly snapped at their small child. With heavy hearts, the family reluctantly agreed that this was a ‘deal breaker”, as they could just not risk a dangerous pet around their child.  They made the gut wrenching decision to bring the dog to the local shelter. While there, a kind person noticed the dog was experiencing a severe ear infection, and was suffering in a huge amount of silent pain! Sounds like it could never happen on your watch? Don’t be so sure, in reality, I have seen this happen more than once, just in my own practice, with all different species of animals.

Animals are much less complicated emotionally than we humans are, so if something so completely out of the ordinary occurs, it is DEFINITELY your animal conveying some kind of message to you. And it’s up to us, the mammal with the bigger brain, to figure out what that something, is!

It could be something very serious, and a sudden change in behavior, should NEVER be ignored.

So what is the one thing you MUST do, at LEAST once every week, to connect with your animals emotionally, and thereby, be more likely to notice problems like this long before they happen?

Do this at your animal’s next meal, play, or snack time. Have them wait, and make eye contact with you, for at least 5 full seconds, freely and without any restraint, before they proceed. It’s sort of like saying ‘grace’ before enjoying dinner, or asking politely “please may I”, before proceeding.  Just a quick ‘check in’ conversation between you, and your loved one, at a time when you are in the best position to likely have their full attention.

If you can’t do this with any of your animals, then there is a trust issue.  Notice, I did not say a dominance, issue, there is a very BIG and IMPORTANT difference!

Training and bonding with your animal’s is not about a lot of learning theory, rules, video’s, gadgets, or worst of all, “showing who is BOSS”! It’s about a peaceful coexistence, in safety and trust, with all the animals in your care. Through a few simple little interactions, or changes in your current routine, you too can  reap huge benefits in the emotional connection, and subsequent ability to note and address physical issues, long before they become a ‘deal breaker”.

This is how you know, they trust you. This is how you know, you can trust them.

If you can’t do it, start making changes, today, in how you interact with your animal, to be able to accomplish this small 5 second check in. If you have tried, and failed, give me a call, I can help you help make it happen, no matter what animal your’s happens to be. Doesn’t make sense, or need more clarification?  Likely someone else does too, so do us all a favor and leave comments below.

DrQ the Life Coach for People with Pets, helping you both live happier and healthier, longer!

The Only 3 Rules You Need to Know to Train ANY Animal to do ANYTHING

You look to your veterinarian for such things as to ensure that you pet is healthy, up to date on vaccines, and likely to live a long life. People don’t usually think of their vet first with behavior or training concerns, or to ensure that their pets behavior is likely to contribute to along, productive life. But the truth is many behavior issues need to be addressed from a medical perspective, and conversely, behavior greatly contributes to the health and longevity of your companion animal. From everything as obvious as not bolting into traffic, to more subtle such as ulcers or urinary tract infections caused by housing stress, health and behavior are intricately intertwined. For those animal caretakers who are committed to maximizing the health, as well as the emotional bond, between themselves and the animals they love, then a truly ‘wholistic’ approach is the one that makes the most sense, and the one for which DrQ is here to help.

Dr. Questen (aka DrQ), is a compassionate veterinarian with more than 20 years of experience helping clients with their companion dogs, cats, horses, and fish. Her approach is holistic in more ways than one, not only is she a certified animal acupuncturist and experienced in natural remedies, but she also has a passion for the SCIENCE of animal behavior, and longs to dispel some of the the many behavior and training myths and misconceptions out there which drive a wedge between the joyful relationship so many clients could have with their animals.

Although the relationship we have with animals is slightly different depending upon the species, the basic premise is the same, a sense of cooperation, and benevolent leadership, is much preferable and scientifically more successful than one based on dominance and control. It’s the same principles that dolphin trainers use, and all professionals who have studied the science of animal behavior.
So no matter if you have an English jumper who is spooky over rails, or a poodle lap dog that barks at the mail man, both of those behaviors could affect the animals health, and both of these need to be addressed from a medical perspective first. Once the physical has been determined to not be contributing to the problem, then the science of behavior takes over, and you have one person to turn to who can you guide you through it all, with knowledge and caring.

DrQ’s three simple principles for effective animal training:

  1. Safety first
  2. Ask politely; reward appropriately
  3. If after 3 asks you don’t get what you hoped for, stop, take a deep breath, smile, and ask for something easy. Then start over at step one.

If these steps don’t make sense, or you have tried them and they don’t seem to work, then it’s time for the help of a qualified positive reinforcement oriented trainer, or better yet a consult with DrQ.

Follow these 3 simple steps and teach almost any animal to do almost anything,  which will ultimately lead to a deeper bond, less stress and anxiety, and a longer life for both you and the animals in your care.
I’m DrQ, here to help you, and your animals live healthier and happier, longer!
